Label Dictionary

Sometimes Nutrient Claims are made on Nutrition Facts Panels.   Just like the nutrition facts, nutrient content claims are defined for one serving.  For example, that means that a high-fiber cereal has 5 or more grams of fiber per serving.

It might be useful to know some definitions of some typical nutrient content claims…

Nutrient Content Claim

Calories:

Calorie free

Low calorie

Reduced or fewer calories

Light or lite

 

Less than 5 calories

One-third fewer calories or 50% less fat*

Sugar:

Sugar free

Reduced sugar or less sugar

Less than 0.5 gram sugars

At lest 25% less sugars

No sugars added during processing or packing, including ingredients that contain sugars, such as just or dry fruit

Fat:

Fat free

Low fat

Reduced or less fat

Light

 

Less than 0.5 g fat

3 grams or less of fat

At least 25% less fat*

One-third fewer calories or 50% less fat*

Saturated Fat:

Saturated fat free

Low saturated fat

 

Reduced or less saturated fat

 

Less than 0.5 gram saturated fat

1 gram or less saturated fat and no more than 15% of calories from saturated fat

Cholesterol:

Cholesterol free
